Ahead of their crucial Bundesliga clash against Borussia Mönchengladbach, Borussia Dortmund coach Niko Kovac has sharply rebuffed criticism regarding his team's playing style. Kovac emphasizes that BVB's success takes priority, even if the attractiveness of their game isn't always at the forefront.
The Black and Yellows are enjoying their best season since 2018-19 with 67 points and only four defeats. Despite this impressive record and 65 goals scored – only champions Bayern Munich have netted more – Borussia Dortmund's team faces accusations of lacking attractive play.
Speaking to the FAZ, Kovac addressed the high expectations placed on BVB. He provocatively questioned whether attractiveness is more important than success, pointing out that the Bundesliga is not a constant theatre stage where every team can deliver an attacking spectacle weekly.
Kovac is convinced that his team has certainly delivered some very good and entertaining matches this season. He highlighted the need to find the right balance between style and substance, especially with the upcoming game against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Meanwhile, Borussia Mönchengladbach finds itself in the lower third of the Bundesliga table and has failed to win any of their last six games. Although the Foals maintain a six-point buffer over the relegation play-off spot, their current form could play into Dortmund's hands as Kovac aims for maximum points from their remaining three matches.
The BVB coach expressed his belief that his team can reach 72 points – a tally that would have made Borussia Dortmund German champions in 2023. 'Unfortunately, it won't be enough this time,' he added, hinting at a missed championship despite their strong performance.
