The 23-year-old US midfielder joins Ligue 1, where he will replace Valentín Barco, who moved to Chelsea for €40M. With bonuses, the deal could rise to €4M. Gladbach also secured a 10% sell-on clause. Reyna, who joined Gladbach from Borussia Dortmund for €4M last summer, struggled for game time. In 20 appearances (577 minutes), he started just five times and contributed two goal involvements. His market value dropped from €7M to €4M. ## Why the move makes sense for both parties Reyna battled injuries and failed to establish himself in Gladbach. Sport director Rouven Schröder explained: “Gio is an excellent player who only hinted at his potential here. We wanted to trim the squad, so parting ways was the right decision.” In Strasbourg, Reyna will fill the void left by Barco. He signed a contract until 2031. ## What does this sale mean for Gladbach’s squad planning? With Reyna’s sale, Gladbach recoups the €4M they paid Borussia Dortmund in 2023. The team finished 12th in the 2024/25 Bundesliga with 38 points (9W-11D-14L) and a goal difference of 42:53. Their next match is against SV Elversberg on September 5.
