Gladbach's Breel Embolo was sent off in the World Cup quarterfinals against Argentina. The Swiss striker had to leave the pitch after a dive against Leandro Paredes.
What happened?
The referee Joao Pinheiro from Portugal initially decided on a free kick for Switzerland and showed yellow to Paredes. But then the video assistant Guillermo Pacheco from Mexico intervened and called Pinheiro to the screen.
The consequences
The consequences for the Swiss were brutal: Embolo had to take a shower, Argentina used the numerical advantage coldly and marched into the semifinals. As a result, Nico Elvedi, the last remaining Swiss player, was also eliminated from the tournament.
FIFA's reaction
FIFA has now admitted that the sending off was a mistake. The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has confirmed in a letter that the video assistant's intervention was against the rules. Gladbach is currently 14th in the Bundesliga table with 30 points from 29 games. The next match is on February 6, 2027, against SC Freiburg. Yukhym Konoplya is currently injured.
